A SMALL family-run independent toyshop in Brighton has been named among the shortlisted finalists in the UK’s inaugural Small Awards.

The awards are run in association with Facebook and they been established to recognise the achievements of small and micro-businesses.

Wigwam Toys, which is located in Fiveways,opened four years ago, and specialises in design-led, low-tech toys and gifts that stimulate imaginations.

After the death of the shop’s previous owner, co-founders Clair Letton and Jesse Marshall slowly established new branding, changed the shop front and concentrated on building ties to the local community.

Last year was the shop’s most successful to date with plans in train to launch an e-commerce website later this year.

Wigwam Toys has now been named as a finalist in the High Street Hero category in this year’s Small Awards.

Clair said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Small Awards.

“We take such pleasure and have great pride in our business,

“We are truly passionate about the role of small businesses and how they impact positively on how people feel about where they live.

“I believe that a community of small businesses are not only good for the economy of an area but help reduce loneliness, and improve people’s mental health.

“From parents at home alone with children who need to get out and about, or, the elderly members of our community, who pop in for a daily chat.?

“It is a real honour to work in such close contact with those who live around us and to know that what we do matters to our community.”

This award, sponsored by business and accounts software provider Sage, recognises strong high street businesses with a proven record of contributing towards the success of their street.

The businesses must be active in their community and be working to drive footfall to their business and neighbouring businesses.
