BRIGHTON’s gay history dates back as far as the city’s history as a pleasure resort.
Much of Brighton’s gay history is found through newspaper articles because many people were not openly gay inthe past for fear of recrimination.
On July 12, 1990, after Princess Diana gave a speech to the International Congress of the Family at Brighton Centre, five lesbians staged a peaceful demonstration by walking on to the stage with placards that said “Lesbian mothers aren’t pretending”.
The protesters were thrown out of the event and joined by more demonstrators outside.
The International Congress of the Family is a United States coalition that promotes Christian rights values internationally.
It opposes same-sex marriage, pornography, and abortion, while supporting a society built on “the voluntary union of a man and a woman in a lifelong covenant of marriage”.
Do you recognise any of the protestors or the guest speakers on stage with Princess Diana?
Were you present or did you witness the protest?
