The new Alex has become a landmark on the Brighton skyline with its distinctive ark design.

It has its roots in the maritime setting and nautical heritage of Sussex's coast and its position gives it an abundance of daylight and sea views - all of which have been exploited for children and staff.

The top decks of the Alex, with views of the coastline, will be the domain of inpatient children and their families.

One of the hospital's signature features appears here - the children's "look-outs". These extra windows are positioned to allow each bed an uninterrupted view of the sea.

Architect Benedict Zucchi said: "As the design began to take shape, it became known among our team as the children's ark.

"This was a reassuring and optimistic image around which we integrated architecture, engineering, art, interior finishes, colours and furniture in a way that resonates with children, families and staff.

"I believe we have created a fresh and user-friendly environment full of light."

At the centre of the building is the atrium, a ten-storey high open social space that ensures maximum levels of daylight stream into the heart of the hospital.

It will be the focus for much of the social interaction, including art classes and therapeutic installations.

Play decks and balconies have been provided at all levels, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the calming influence of the sea.
