Someone Anyone are a five-piece band with members in Brighton, Hastings, London and Manchester. Despite this the musicians are pulling it off, playing gigs along the South Coast.
ZARA ROWDEN, a student at BIMM Brighton, caught up with the band’s guitarist and singer Harry Osborne about a new single.
How did the music video for your track Awake come together?
That was a very funny night. The sea was incredibly cold and our friend Khari Miller was the star. She held it together but the freezing water sent me a bit mad and I couldn’t concentrate. The producer, Lewis Bennett of Skinnymatic Productions, really helped get the best out of us.
How has studying at BIMM had an impact on the band?
Well that’s where I met Jamie Thomas, our bassist. He’s an amazing bass player and all round great bloke. I learnt a lot through some of the guitar tuition there, which is a really solid part of the course.
As a band do you ever have any disagreements during your recording process?
The band are all great players and mature enough to discuss things and come to the best conclusions so it always works out. We occasionally disagree but it’s usually more to do with administrative stuff. The production is mainly done at our studio in Pett [between Hastings and Rye] and involves my dad Keith Osborne and myself. It’s great working with him.
You’re from Brighton and Hastings. Do you feel Brighton has more to offer as a music scene or is Hastings just as good?
We now have members in London and Manchester which can be a challenge. The music scene in Brighton is great but I do feel Hastings has something unique. Last time we played a gig in Hastings it was completely mad – the venue was completely packed with people screaming all the songs. Nothing can beat that, but it’s important to not get too caught up in that and try and play gigs farther out.
During your time as a band have you experienced a darker side to the music industry?
In a previous project of mine with the drummer (Charlie) we lost a bit of money. But you learn from these things and hear alarm bells ringing in certain situations now. Being a Musicians Union member definitely helps. I would recommend it to every musician who is working professionally.
Do you have new music on the way?
We most certainly do, I’m actually mixing it now. It’s our brand new single called Know and we’re just writing the video for it at the moment. It will be out for a single launch gig on December 23.
What can we expect?
It’s definitely a bigger sound than our previous records. The whole song digs into one line that makes the whole tune. There’s a lovely bit of saxophone magic at the end too.
Do you have any local gigs coming up?
Our next headline show is in Hastings at The Albion on December 23. It’s very easy to get the train. Our next Brighton gig is still being confirmed so I don’t want to say in case it doesn’t happen. With all the recording, gigs have been on the backburner but in the new year we should be playing a few shows.
What is the ultimate goal for Someone Anyone?
We just want to make great music that is original. I would also like to get to a point of producing other bands and featuring in songs with them. I couldn’t think of anything else I would rather work towards.
Do you have a dream collaboration?
Dead or alive, I think working with David Bowie. Sadly this is only a dream now. For the band’s future, it would have to be Daft Punk. I think together we’d make something special.
