SUSSEX is known for its great wine and the beer is winning top prizes too.

Long Man Brewery - based at Litlington in the Cuckmere Valley - has seen two of its flagship brands win best in the UK in their categories.

The hoppy and robust Long Man, American Pale Ale and the Sussex mainstay Long Man, Best Bitter, beat the competition to win the best UK beer in the Pale Ale and the Bitters up to four percent categories in the World Beer Awards.

The other winning beers were Long Man, Long Blonde which achieved Silver in the Golden Ales section, and the popular winter seasonal Long Man, Old Man, also a Silver medallist in the Olds and Milds area.

Head Brewer Jamie Simm said: "We are immeasurably proud of the four awards we have achieved at this year’s World Beer Awards and it’s a great reward for the hard work that the production team put into creating consistently good beer.

"We’re not trying to re-invent the wheel when it comes to brewing, we are simply trying to create quality beers that we and other people like to drink."

Long Man beers crafted in a flint barn in the heart of the South Downs National Park use barley grown on the surrounding farm land.

Water is drawn from a bore hole on site and electricity is generated by a bank of solar panels.

Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the Long Man ethos and waste products such as water and spent grain are re-used, composted or fed to livestock.

Director Duncan Ellis said: "We believe that by looking after the land around us and sourcing everything we can from within the vicinity of our brewery, we can produce the very finest of Sussex ales as well as giving back to the land and community that we rely on to sustain our business."

The latest four accolades take the awards won by the Long Man Brewery in 2016 to eight, totalling 17 since the brewery’s inception in March 2012.
