Brighton five-piece Dove House speak to WILL TAVENER about the songwriting process and releasing their first single, which you can watch here.
Who are Dove House?
My name is Jack, I’m the lead singer and guitarist in Dove House. The rest of the band are Kieran Philbin, Ish Hussein, Anthony Barrett, Nick Roberts.
How did you all meet and what made you decide to start a band together?
We all met at college in Haywards Heath. Next thing we know we all ended up at BIMM Brighton and I guess we just fell into each others arms. I don’t know why it didn’t happen sooner as we are all great pals and we all bring something different to the musical ‘table’ so to speak.
Where did the name Dove House come from?
Well one day I was just thinking of band names and as usual couldn’t come up with anything good. Then I started thinking about what I would call an album if I ever made one and I came up with Dove House Electro-Sonic which you cannot deny sounds amazing. I’ve always liked the idea of peace as well so that was kind of the “Dove” part and I guess it just ended up becoming the band name.
What is your songwriting process as a band?
So far it has mainly consisted of me coming up with the basis of a song, the lyrics and melody, and pitching it to the guys. After phase one the guys tell me what they like and start adding their parts or changing the underlying chords to make the song a million times better. Other times we might just jam ideas until we have some sort of cohesive arrangement.
What made you want to go to BIMM Brighton?
We want to be the biggest band in the world and it seemed like a good place to start.
Are there any BIMM bands that particularly impress you?
I remember seeing King Leviathan once and their live show was incredible. We love Blue Eyed Giants as well, they are easily the best band around right now.
What is your favourite venue in Brighton to play?
The Haunt is pretty sweet but The Hope and Ruin will always be one of our favourites.
Which venues would you most like to play that you haven’t already?
Concorde 2 or The Dome as they are the most premium venues in Brighton and we are all about that premium vibe. Plus they have housed some great artists and to play the same stage would be amazing.
You released your single Cheap Tricks earlier in the summer, how was that?
We were over the moon with the release and the launch show went down so well! We also managed to get the single on ‘Record Of The Day’ as well which was amazing for exposure. Also the b-side ‘Don’t Say It’ was BBC introducing the South’s track of the day. Twice!
What are your opinions on the Brighton music scene?
The scene here is incredible and I think anyone who is thinking about getting into music or playing in a band should go for it. You will meet so many great and kind people and if you are passionate then you can achieve anything you want. I really don’t think there is a better place to start.
What’s next for Dove House?
We are currently planning quite a few things, expect a new single out by the end of the year at the latest and fingers crossed an EP in 2017. We are hungry to get the ball rolling.
