Train passengers are facing more rail chaos this morning after ticket machines across Sussex began malfunctioning.

Southern Rail has apologised to train passengers as ticket machines are unable to take card payment.

Commuters have said that both Brighton and Hove stations are affected causing huge queues.

The rail operator is recommending that tickets are bought in cash, from a conductor or at commuters' destinations while they work to resolve the problem.

A Southern spokesman said: "We have had issues with the acceptance of credit cards this morning.

"The problem stems from a failure with some of the systems we use for card authorisation payments.

"At present, transactions are going through, although they are taking longer than usual to complete.

"We are working on a permanent fix and we apologise for the inconvenience this is causing."
