A POLICE sergeant accused of stealing more than £1,000 of force equipment has appeared in court.
Warren Downs appeared before magistrates in Crawley on charges of five counts of theft, one count of fraud by false representation and one count of criminal damage.
He is accused of stealing smartphones, CCTV cameras, search lights and a nail gun.
The 46-year-old has been suspended from his role as a sergeant based in the Rye neighbourhood policing team.
He was arrested in March by detectives from Sussex Police's Professional Standards Department.
Downs was bailed at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and ordered not to contact any witnesses in the case.
He will appear again before judges in three weeks’ time.
