A CYCLIST inspired to take to the saddle by Sir Bradley Wiggins is hoping to complete 100 of the UK’s toughest cycling climbs in 12 days.

Richard Burt, 62, wants to raise £50,000 for national charity Dementia UK in honour of his mother Peggy, who has had Alzheimer’s for the past six years.

His journey, starting today [August 18], will include two hills in Sussex - the Ditchling Beacon and Steyning Bostal - and he will travel as far afield as Wales and Scotland.

Richard, who has been a cyclist for just four years, said: "This challenge is extremely personal for me – it’s all for my mum, who is a wonderful person.

"When I visit I’m sometimes her dad, sometimes I’m her husband or sometimes I’m her son but it doesn’t matter to me, it’s enough for me to know she loves me and that’s why I’m doing this for her."

Richard, from Solihull, says the challenge is inspired by Simon Warren – the author of 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs - and he and his team will travel to each climb day and night.

His mother lives in a care home owned by Sanctuary Care, who have donated much-needed funds and providing Richard and his team of volunteers with a branded kit.

Sanctuary Care’s Managing Director Mark McCarthy said: "We’re delighted to be supporting Richard with his challenge. He’s an inspiration to many and the funds he raises will help provide vital support for a charity so close to his and many of our hearts."

Sanctuary Care was established in 1995 to provide older people with high quality nursing and residential care
