IT was billed as a spectacular display celebrating the arrival of Brighton's greatest piece of construction in a century.

But there was a distinct sense of disappointment from those who watched British Airways i360's five-minute fireworks display on Saturday night.

Hundreds gathered near the i360 on the seafront while others paid to watch from the attraction’s boarding deck, which gave the best view.

While some described the show as “amazing” and “spectacular”, others said they were “disappointed” and “underwhelmed.”

Some took to Twitter to say they felt particularly let down by the fireworks display, which they had expected to last for 15 minutes.

In fact the fireworks section of the event ran for about five minutes and formed part of the show, which lasted 15 minutes overall.

Darren Gander wrote: “Having driven ten miles to watch the fireworks, slightly disappointed they lasted for just under four minutes, Needs to be longer.

Others described them as a “damp squib” and a “waste of time” and said the black smoke they generated made it difficult to see them.

Andy Fish Bloke wrote: “Fireworks tonight were a total anti-climax, Short and not worth the effort to be honest.”

Glen Keating said: “I had better fireworks in my back garden bought from Tesco.”

However Gwinnutt Millinery said: Amazing fireworks thank you” and Clare Rogers said: “Loved the fireworks tonight. Perfect evening for it.”

A spokeswoman for British Airways i360 said the 15 minute show started with the pod rising, then lighting and culminated in fireworks, which were all set to music.

She said: “It was a sound, light and firework display, which was designed to be watched from the boarding deck and the beach south of the attraction and there was a great atmosphere.

“The feedback from people from the recommended vantage point has been very positive with a big thumbs up for the Close Encounters and space themed music accompanying the pod lighting.”

The display had originally been scheduled to take place on the i360’s opening night on August 4 but had to be cancelled because of poor weather conditions.
