THE green light has been given to restore a seafront kiosk.
Listed building consent has been granted for Brighton and Hove City Council to restore and move the historic Shelter Hall kiosk 100 metres along the seafront.
The yellow ten-sided building from 1883 will be moved as part of the £11 million Shelter Hall regeneration at the bottom of West Street.
The badly corroded and rotten kiosk, originally built as a natural light lantern to illuminate the hall below but more recently operating as a snack bar, was dismantled in early February for safety reasons.
Photographs have been taken of the structure to assist with its restoration.
Decorative ironwork is being cast in Oxford while rotten woodwork will be replaced by Patching-based Seth Evans Joinery, which worked on the council’s award-winning reconstruction of historic fishermen’s arches near the i360.
The kiosk will be rebuilt on the East Street Bastion while a new rotunda will be created on top of the rebuilt Shelter Hall.
Councillor Gill Mitchell, chairwoman of the council’s environment committee, said: “This building was so badly rotted and rusted it was barely attached to the ground. We’re aiming to restore the kiosk to its original appearance, including replacing decorative features which have gone missing over the years.
“Restoration of the kiosk, the Shelter Hall, and two long sections of fishermen’s arches together show the council is making a massive effort to retain and protect our heritage and inject new life into the seafront.”
