DEBT collectors who prompted a police warning due to fears they may be bogus callers were in fact acting on behalf of Southern Water, police have said.
On Friday afternoon police issued a warning, with Southern Water's agreement, after callers from Orbit Debt Collections visited two elderly residents saying they owed money.
The statement at 3.50pm said that Southern Water had no connection with any company of that name.
However, later that day police issued a second statement saying Southern Water had just clarified those two calls were from Orbit Collections, working for the company.
A police spokesman added: "But if you, or in particular any elderly person you know, are ever approached in such circumstances, still always use proper caution and check their bona fides.
"If in doubt do not hand over any money and contact the police".
