RESPONDING to the letters on Hove Library, it is important to emphasise once again that the library is being moved, not closed.
The Carnegie Building isn’t designed for today’s needs, it's very costly to run and is actually further away from the majority of users than Hove Museum.
We as a council are facing enormous cuts to our funding and we cannot afford to continue as we are.
Pouring money into keeping the Carnegie building open would mean the closure of at least six other libraries across the city.
Our innovative solution keeps a library in Hove, keeps branch libraries across the city and indeed increases opening hours as that is what library users say they want.
Libraries need to work in a digital age, not a Victorian one.
Combining the library and museum in Hove will put history, culture, library services and arts on one site with a café and outdoor space, becoming a real community hub.
In a survey by local councillors and Peter Kyle MP, 75 per cent of residents said they backed the proposals.
Our heritage is important, but we will fight to save services, not buildings, in the face of the huge financial challenges ahead.
Councillor Warren Morgan, Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council
