Having read the article about St Peter's Church (The Argus, May 15) I feel that I must comment on the contradictory message being sent out by members of the congregation.

Surely they should be encouraging people into the church rather than preventing entrance. Although I sympathise with their concerns about losing this place of worship, I do feel that if some members of the current congregation were more welcoming to newcomers this would increase numbers and therefore income, thus giving them a stronger point to fight from.

Having experienced the unwelcoming atmosphere myself, the message seemed to be: keep out.
