If there is one thing that Lib Dems love it is proportional representation.
This is because it inevitably leads to coalition and turns them into kingmakers.
Yet look at the chaos it is causing in Scotland and Wales after the recent elections. Held under the usual system there would be administrations up and running.
The beauty of first past the post is it is so clear and decisive. At a general election a defeated Prime Minister is loading up a removals van at No 10 the next morning. It also gives maximum power to the voters who can produce a political earthquake as they did in 1997 and 2001 - or they can punish a Prime Minister as they did in 2005.
We abandon such a clear and welltried system at our peril.
