With regard to the proposals for a threelane road through Worthing to allieviate the congestion (The Argus, May 8), this is ridiculous. The only way to do it is with four lanes, all the way from Lyons Farm to the Coach and Horses.
There is ample room all along the road by taking out the grass verges along the road. The roundabout at Grove Lodge could be made a tenth of its present size and the road clearly marked in two lanes - righthand lane for A27 and lefthand lane for A24 into Worthing; likewise coming up onto this roundabout from Broadwater, the left-hand lane could be marked for straight on to the A27 and the righthand lane for Brighton-bound traffic.
There needs to be a roundabout, not traffic lights, at Lyons Farm and no right turns against the traffic at any point. In particular to allow right turns at Half Moon Lane and Salvington Hill is absolute madness - it is so unsafe.
A couple of pedestrian bridges would have to be built, as has happened at Boundstone in Lancing.
OK, a few residents will be inconvenienced by having to go along to a roundabout to double back if they wish to travel in the opposite direction, but this would be a small price to pay for the good of all concerned. Lancing residents have had to get used to it.
