I was fascinated to read Catherine French of Varndean's letter (Letters, May 14) about Brighton and Hove City Council allowing her neighbour to instal windows overlooking her house and garden without planning permission.
I, on the other hand, require full planning permission to glass in my open balcony, which only overlooks the open sea - until the council sponsored 400ft tower is built, that is. It seems as though my right to a bright, sunny balcony which has stunning views can be taken away, while I must jump through bureaucratic hoops to try to protect myself in some small way from this coming nightmare of being overshadowed and overlooked.
The noise of the pile-driving will make sitting out impossible. Double glazing is the only answer, but in this city the rights of the individual can be sacrificed to the whims of developers and the council.
