Attendance has improved and children have positive attitudes at a school rated "satisfactory" by inspectors.
Ofsted officials gave Benfield Junior in Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, a Grade 3 ranking after a visit on April 24 and 25. They said the 292 pupil school for seven to 11-year-olds was improving and had some good features.
In her report, inspector Lisa Perrins said: "Pupils' personal development is good. Most pupils behave well and have positive attitudes to their work. Their attendance has recently improved, which points towards an enjoyment of the changes made to life in school."
She said the school needed to challenge pupils more effectively in maths classes, improve the consistency of teaching and rigorously check the impact of new initiatives.
