With reference to the article headlined "Action over death road" (The Argus, May 10), a simple way to improve safety for cyclists around Brighton's Clock Tower is to immediately re-open North Street Quadrant.
Brighton and Hove City Council closed it without consultation in 2003. Since then, we have been campaigning to get it re-opened for cycling.
This slip road by the Clock Tower used to enable cyclists to get out of the way of buses and other vehicles.
The result of blocking it has been a completely unnecessary increase in danger. For example, if cyclists want to go to the train station, they are now forced to stay on the road with heavy traffic past the busy Clock Tower area and make a sharp left hand turn (up Queen's Road) at the same time.
For a so-called cycle demonstration town this closure has demonstrated total neglect of the needs of cyclists.
Addressing pedestrian-bus incidents in Brighton is certainly long overdue but the £750,000 set aside for the project should be spent with some awareness of the realities of cycling in Brighton and with proper consultation.
