Director Martin Nicholls has chosen to mount a modern-dress production of Shakespeare's great tragedy. He seeks to link it with the "War on Terror" and for good measure he has Richard's enemies as recent converts to Islam. The relevance of this interpretation will be a matter of individual choice.
What there can be no doubt about is that the production provides good entertainment with many fine performances.
Rob Maloney, in the title role, excels once he drops the ranting and histrionics with which he begins the play. His performance grows as he allows subtlety to take over.
Sheelagh Baker gives a masterclass in controlled acting as the Duchess of York, while there are two strong performances from Aimee Laura, firstly as the grieving widow Anne, wooed by Richard, and then as one of the young murdered Princes - truly childlike in her portrayal.
