Following on from your news item "Business owners in The Lanes are fed up of it being referred to as South Lanes'"
(The Argus, April 27): in The Lanes we are constantly striving to attract people to the area and maintaining a strong identity is crucial to our businesses and marketing.
By inventing the South Lanes we are just causing confusion.
The Lanes is referred to as the Old Town and has history dating to 1085. It is bounded by East Street, North Street and Ship Street.
North Laine is an area to the north of the Old Town from North Street to Trafalgar Street and became developed in the latter part of the 18th century.
These areas have always been distinct from each other. The Lanes has never been referred to as the South Lanes, and North Laine has never been referred to as the North Lanes.
