With the local elections now so near, it seems an appropriate time to say how much fun it has been working with local residents and, indeed, our political rivals from all the other parties.
Although the past year has been highly enjoyable, it has also been a real challenge. Politicians are really being put to the test this time around in Regency ward and this is a good thing for Brighton and Hove. We would certainly say "get involved" to anybody who loves our city and wants to change it for the better. We have discovered that it is possible, with hard work, to make a difference.
The centre of Brighton will face many challenges over the next few years and a whole package of policies is needed. On top of the obvious issues on which all parties now agree such as the need to recycle more, we must decide on what is to replace the Brighton Centre, how to deal with yobbish behaviour and how to keep the streets clean.
But with the election so close, this isn't the time for propaganda - it's the time to decide. So firstly, please vote! But secondly, examine your candidates closely - you will be stuck with your councillors, as your representatives on many issues, for the next four years.
- Michael Macfarlane and Robert S Nemeth, Conservative candidates, Regency ward
