An earthquake has been felt in parts of Sussex today.

The quake damaged buildings and disruped electricity supplies when it hit Kent.

Emergency services received reports of structural damage including cracked walls and fallen chimneys in Folkestone and nearby areas.

The tremor occurred at 8.18am.

The tremor was felt in Sussex in the Hastings area.

Linda Jones, 56, from Camber Sands, said: "My bed just shook. About five years ago when a heavy lorry went down the road it used to shake a lot. It was like that only more so. "I didn't hear anything at all. I thought it was about three seconds. The whole bed shook and the whole house. It was disconcerting to say the least." Mrs Jones also heard the explosion at Buncefield oil depot in December 2005 from her home. The epicentre of today's tremor was about 15 miles south of Canterbury and registered 4.7 on the Richter scale. Sussex Police said they were enlisted to take 999 calls on behalf of their counterparts in Kent who were dealing with the incident. Emergency services were scrambled to respond to any fall-out from the earthquake. Solent Coastguard sent out teams to check all along the coastline to make sure there were no landslips and coastal paths were safe and to make sure none of the safety equipment had been damaged.
