The parents of Matthew Grimstone have called for aerobatic displays to be restricted to taking place over the sea to avoid a repeat of the tragedy.
Speaking to national media, mother Sue Grimstone said his death was “a waste”, adding: “Air shows should be over the sea. It should never have been over that road.”
A family statement read: “We are still in a state of shock over the tragic death of our dearly loved son, brother and boyfriend Matthew, taken from us all too soon at the age of 23.
“He was so gentle, kind and funny – just ask those who knew him. He did not have a bad word to say about anyone.
“He loved his football and was a talented goalkeeper and a fine referee.
“We would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of support.
“At some point the question needs to be asked should aerobatic flying displays take place over populated areas and busy roads. I know what our son Matthew would say.”
Steve Winterburn, head groundsman at Brighton and Hove Albion, was with his colleagues at Shoreham’s Tollbridge over the River Adur to pay respects yesterday.
He said: “It’s extremely upsetting. Matt didn’t just work for the club, but supported it as well.
“No one expects something like this to happen. We are feeling it a lot.”
Brighton and Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk used Twitter to pay tribute to Mr Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, also killed in the crash: “RIP you two. Have some great memories smashing it for our school team with you both! My thoughts go to your families.”
