The names of the two young women who died in a four car pile-up on a road known as "death mile" have been revealed.
They were Jessica Nixon-Lea, 20, a student at the University of Brighton originally from Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and Gemma Lee, 20, from Bexhill.
Miss Nixon-Lea died at Eastbourne District General Hospital on Wednesday following the crash on the A27 at Selmeston on Tuesday. She had been at the wheel of a Renault Clio in the collision.
Miss Lee, who had been passenger in a Fiat Seicento, died at the scene.
Sussex Police arrested a 22-year-old male lorry driver from Worthing in connection with causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed pending further enquiries and is expected to be recalled in six weeks time.
Miss Nixon-Lea was a second year student studying psychology and sociology. She had celebrated her 20th birthday just over a month before the accident, on March 6.
Neither victims' family was available to comment yesterday.
Emma Wrigley, a friend of Miss Nixon-Lea, said: "She will be sadly missed."
On her pages on the Bebo website Miss Nixon-Lea described herself as happiest when she was partying or shopping. She said she was learning to snowboard and sail and she loved horseriding and surfing.
She talked about holidays in Cornwall where she would relax on the beach and enjoy barbecues and had posted photos from a trip to South-East Asia.
Miss Lee had been in a car driven by a 20-year-old man from St Leonards who was taken to hospital with slight injuries.
She was described by her grandfather as a lively 20-year-old with everything to live for.
The 38-year-old passenger of the Ford Transit Luton lorry involved in the collision was treated at hospital for minor injuries as was a Littlehampton man driving a BMW which was the fourth vehicle in the crash.
Prior to the accident four people had been killed and 18 injured on the stretch of road, near Charleston Farm, where the tragedy happened.
It has been earmarked for improvements by the Highways Agency.
The crash caused gridlock on the surrounding roads for several hours on Tuesday.
Sergeant Paul Masterson, from the road policing unit in Polegate, has appealed for any witnesses to the collision to contact him on 0845 6070999.
Sgt Masterson said: "A lot of people must have seen the vehicles involved around the time of the accident. We would like to hear from as many of them as possible."
