As a life member of the Association of Town Centre Management, which led the campaign for the Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) I must point out that Mr Wright (The Argus, April 19) misses the two essential points about them.
1. The initiative for a BID must come from the businesses in a particular area.
2. The BID can only be set up following a vote from all the businesses in the area, as happened in North Laine and The Lanes.
On behalf of the association I chaired the steering group for the UK's first 20 successful BIDs. In all of them, traders saw the benenfits to their businesses of improvements to their areas over and above what the law says local councils should provide.
