It is doubtful whether an extended Valley Gardens would by itself reduce the level of traffic (The Argus, April 15).
Congestion charging and a reduction in city centre parking spaces is more likely to do that.
If the Valley Gardens are under-used it is not that they are surrounded by traffic.
Some park benches would enable people to sit in the gardens. In Victorian times they were criss-crossed by paths encouraging people to walk through them in the way the meandering paths have encouraged people to walk through the Pavilion Gardens.
Imaginative planting such as that in the Pavilion Gardens would help the Valley Gardens too.
In what way would this plan for an extended park help save St Peter's Church? Could we not designate Preston Park as the city park?
