Last Sunday, I took an enjoyable walk along the Brighton seafront, pausing from time to time to admire the new signs naming sections of the beach.
Enjoyable, that is, until I came across a sign that read "Brighton Pier". Oh no. The correct name is "Palace Pier", as The Argus continues to call it.
The fact the Noble Organisation changed the name to Brighton Pier without public consultation and the council just sat back and allowed it is neither here or there. But that the council should now perpetuate this scandal is nothing short of a disgrace and I ask that the signage be properly readdressed as "Palace Pier" without delay.
Maybe then the issue could be raised with Noble and a compulsory order served with insistence that Brighton be given back the pier's correct name.
I would like add that Brighton and Hove has now been a city since the new millennium and yet there are still several road signs that read "town centre"
rather than "city centre". Even new redirection signs in connection with the North Street roadworks say "town centre" car parks rather than "city centre"
car parks.
Personally, I'm proud Brighton has city status and I would have thought that, if the council felt the same way, street signage should have been altered accordingly well before now.
