East Brighton was touted as one of the safest seats in the city when it was formed four years ago.
But the last election saw the Conservatives trailing Labour by just a few hundred votes and it is likely to be even closer this time.
Labour's three councillors - Gill Mitchell, Warren Morgan and Craig Turton - will hope they have done enough over the past four years to keep their seats.
Councillor Gill Mitchell holds one of the most important positions in the council, enjoying the benefits and drawbacks of a highprofile and controversial remit - environment and transport.
The Conservatives are targeting the seat, and field Victor Mower, former pop star David Van Day and Simon Hackett.
The ward includes large areas of council housing, as well as part of Kemp Town, and the Tories believe that voters have been irritated by plans to transfer the stock to a housing association.
Tory councillors believe they are well placed to take the ward.
The Greens and Lib Dems also hope to make gains in the ward.
The Greens, who are fielding Hugh Miller and Eliza Fakhr, have produced a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender manifesto.
Former Gscene editor James Ledward is standing for the Lib Dems alongside Trefor Hunter and Tim Hodlin - a leading journalist who has interviewed Saddam Hussein. Also standing is Brighton and Hove Independents' Vicki Davies and John McLeod for the Socialist Labour Party.
