I have just finished reading your article regarding NCP's issue of parking tickets during the bank holiday weekend (The Argus, April 9).
I too am a resident of Norman Road, Newhaven, and have been living here for the past seven years.
This is the first occasion during this time that tickets have been issued during a bank holiday.
I am in no doubt NCP have acted within the letter of law in issuing the tickets. However, I believe morally an injustice has been done.
I would understand if only a couple of cars were ticketed. But I think there must be something wrong within the system if one whole side of a road was ticketed.
In fact, there has been no information given out regarding NCP and East Sussex County Council's parking policies. This simple action would have cleared up any confusion.
I also believe the comment by the NCP spokesperson appears to be contradictory. If Newhaven and Lewes are places which attract tourists during bank holidays, what is the difference to a Sunday when you can park freely down the road?
There is a constant problem with parking in Norman Road. Last year there was an exhibition by the council regarding a review of the parking schemes in the town. To date, the residents have not been informed of the latest progress of this programme.
Norman Road is a street with Victorian, terraced houses, which are a developer's dream. At least three new building applications have recently been given to developers to turn the houses into flats.
This in turn increases parking congestion within the road. This situation is not helped by the local businesses using the road to park, rather than the free car park in Hillcrest Road, which you have to drive past to get into Norman Road.
There is also a multi-storey car park in the town next to Sommerfields which ironically is run by NCP and not manned on bank holidays.
I feel that the council should issue an amnesty on all tickets handed out in Norman Road over the bank holiday weekend and ensure information regarding its parking polices are distributed to the residents of Newhaven so this sort of confusion will not be repeated.
