The driver of a car that crashed and killed two young men has been charged with causing their deaths while drunk.

Oliver Glomet, 22, was behind the wheel of the car which crashed on Saint Hill Road, East Grinstead, on Wednesday morning.

He lost control of the white Renault Clio and it veered into a sign and landed in a hedge.

Barman Gary McCrimmon, 31, and concierge Matthew Hatfield, 22, who were colleagues at the five star Alexander House hotel, in Turners Hill, were sitting in the back seat of the car and died from the injuries they suffered in the crash.

Glomet and the front passenger, 23, were cut from the car by firefighters and taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, for treatment but were released on Thursday.

The car was heading towards Alexander House when it crashed into the sign at 12.20am.

Glomet, a French national living in Vowels Lane, near East Grinstead, appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit, and having excess alcohol.

News of the charges came shortly after the family of one of the victims paid a moving tribute to him.

Richard McCrimmon, 33, spoke emotionally about his brother who had lived and worked at the hotel since September 2005.

He said his younger brother was enjoying his life in Turners Hill and was intending to settle in the area.

He said: "Gary told me he was enjoying his time at the hotel. I think he was going to stay there.

"He was a good brother and was always there if I needed him.

"He had his own life and enjoyed his own life but was always there for me."

Mr McCrimmon also leaves behind twin sisters Leanne and Karyn, 21, mother Mary and father Thomas.

The family, from Glasgow, last saw Mr McCrimmon one week before his fatal car crash.

On a four-day visit to Scotland, he saw his 17-month-old niece Rhiannon and eight-month-old niece Taylor for the first time.

Mother Mary said: "He worked hard and was doing really well at the hotel. He was a wonderful son.

"It was only a week ago he came home to see us.

"Words cannot describe what this loss means to us."

The family said they wanted to pass on their thoughts and sympathies to the family of Mr Hatfield.

Glomet was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on July 20.
