Police are warning people to be extra wary of bogus callers after revealing there have been 40 distraction burglaries since the start of the year.
Officers are urging residents, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, to ensure they protect themselves against the con artists.
Across West Sussex, offenders pretending to be "waterboard" officials, tree surgeons or gardeners have managed to successfully steal from 40 homes.
Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tilzey said: "Those using deception methods to gain access to people's homes and steal commit the most callous crimes against the most vulnerable victims.
"Bogus callers are convincing liars and anyone can be taken in by them. Never let anyone into your house unless you are sure they are genuine."
Sussex Police advise residents to take precautions such as fitting and using door chains and always asking for ID.
