Not many musicians have gone from gaining Morrissey's approval to a feature in Hello! with a fellow Big Brother housemate within less than three years.

In fact Preston, frontman of The Ordinary Boys, is probably the only singer to ever make that transition.

Now the man behind one of the most toe-curling love songs to be played on national radio is playing some of his favourite tunes as the special guest of club night Massacre.

Who knows what the playlist could contain? After all, The Ordinary Boys started out playing thrashy punk rock, took their name from a Morrissey b-side, embraced ska on their number two single Boys Will Be Boys and are now purveyors of pure pop, albeit with an ironic edge, on their latest album How to Get Everything You Ever Wanted in Ten Easy Steps.

As Preston said to The Guide last year: "Since Big Brother, there's an extra row of screaming girls at our gigs and that's fine by me."

And he has gone on the attack on the band's website when people have complained about their changes in direction. He says: "Pop music is much harder to play and write than teenybopper punk. Angry youths grow up and become caustic adults. The anger of the first album grew into sarcasm and that is why I view this album much more as a satirical work rather than a work of frustration."

And as he told The Guide he isn't worried about a loss of credibility.

"I'd much rather do something and regret it than not do it and regret it. I might make some mistakes but at least I'm not gonna end up a bitter old man."
