Familly and friends wept tears of joy and smiles beamed from every winner as Sussex paid tribute to its unsung heroes last night.

Many were overcome with emotion as their loved ones were recognised for all their courageous efforts at the sixth annual Argus Achievement Awards.

The glittering ceremony took place last night at the Brighton Hilton Metropole, where famous faces gathered to present finalists with their trophies.

But the real stars were those whose achievements through courage, determination and hard work were finally rewarded on the night.

In February, The Argus asked readers to nominate those who they felt deserved one of 11 awards and last night's ceremony was the culmination of three months of hard work.

All the finalists attended, with those who had nominated them and their families and friends, to receive their presentations.

Celebrities such as reality TV star Momma Cherri, journalist and author Lynne Truss, Southern FM's Danny Pike, newsreader Carol Barnes, Oliver Heath from BBC's Changing Rooms, author James Herbert and disabled artist Alison Lapper presented some of the awards after a drinks reception and dinner.

The evening, sponsored by EDF Energy, was compered by ITN newsreader Nicholas Owen who took the role of MC after entertainment provided by samba band Barulho and balloon artist Andrew Smith.

Mr Owen said: "I am delighted to have been asked for a sixth year to be MC for this very special event.

"I have worked closely with The Argus over the years and feel this is a very worthwhile and deserving evening where members of the community can gain recognition for the little bit extra they give each and every day.

"It is great to see so many people here, from all walks of life."
