The driver of a car which crashed and killed two young men has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police confirmed a 22-year-old man had been arrested following a car crash in Saint Hill Road, East Grinstead, on Wednesday morning.

The driver lost control of the white Ranault Clio and it veered into the next lane before it hit a sign and landed in a hedge.

Barman Gary McCrimmon, 31, and concierge Matthew Hatfield, 22, who were colleagues at the five star Alexander House hotel, in Turners Hill, were sitting in the back seat of the car and died from injuries suffered in the crash.

The driver and the front passenger, 23, were cut from the car by firefighters and taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, for treatment but were released yesterday.

The car was heading towards Alexander House when it crashed into the sign at 12.20am.

Gary's family, who live in Glasgow, yesterday paid tribute to their son who had lived and worked at the hotel since September 2005.

Brother Richard, 33, said: "Gary has always been in the bar trade. He enjoyed doing it and was good at it.

"He told me he was enjoying his time at the hotel. He worked hard but he was having fun at the same time.

"Gary enjoyed the work and the responsibility. I think he was going to stay there."

Gary also leaves behind twin sisters Leanne and Karyn, 21, mother Mary and father Thomas.

The family last saw Gary one week before his fatal car crash.

On a four day visit to Glasgow, he saw his 17-month-old niece Rhiannon and eight-month-old niece Taylor for the first time.

Richard said: "Gary settled well at the Alexander Hotel because he always found it easy to make friends.

"He used to travel a lot with his jobs and has been to Norway, Denmark, the Highlands of Scotland and up and down England.

"You read in the newspapers all the time about how people say someone was fun loving and friendly but Gary really was.

"He was a good brother and was always there if I needed him.

"He had his own life and enjoyed his own life but was always there for me.

"We would like to pass our thoughts and love to the families of the other lads and we sympathise deeply with them."

Mother Mary added: "He worked hard and was doing really well at the hotel. He was a wonderful son."

A postmortem on Gary and Matthew's body is expected to be carried out today.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the white Ranault Clio before the crash to come forward.
