I went to the Lemar concert on Saturday night at the Brighton Centre. While I was impressed with the disabled access the centre provided, I wasn't impressed when the moment Lemar came on stage he shouted for everyone to stand up even though it was a seated concert.
The moment this happened I was no longer able to see the stage.
Being in a wheelchair made it impossible for me to see Lemar.
The ushers at the centre were lovely. They let me move my wheelchair but, though my view improved, people milling about made it next to impossible for me to watch my favourite pop star perform.
Ten minutes into the show I left and went into the foyer.
One of the ushers went and got the manager for me and he managed to find me a space high up in the centre looking directly at the stage. However I had to leave my friends behind in their seats and my new spot was far away from the stage.
Though I stayed for the duration of the show, I was bitterly disappointed by the whole experience and was glad when it was time to go home.
One of the ushers told me a lot of the performers get people to stand up. If this is what they wanted, they should have asked for it to be standing only concert. In this case Lemar's management team had specifically asked for a seated concert so the centre did not provide extra, higher up seating for disabled people so their view would not be blocked.
I won't be going to any more Lemar concerts. As much as I am a fan, I don't want to be disappointed a second time.
