Fascinating to reflect back on the recent article from the Veolia representative saying an incinerator is needed as we're unable to recyle more and consequently landfill resource is rapidly running out (The Argus, February 22).
Now contrast that with the later article (The Argus, March 9) where the Veolia representative states in the two years since operating the waste recycling centres they have been able to assist in increasing recycling rates from 30 per cent to more than 50 per cent, and they are looking to increase this rate even further.
That's two contrasting views on recycling from the same company.
Could that be because ultimately we get what we pay for?
In the case of the waste recycling centres I can hazard a guess that the council has incorporated tough recycling targets on Veolia into the contract.
In the case of the incinerator, the objective is to burn as much as possible to fulfil the terms of that contract with Veolia.
Any chance we can get some councillors and officials to see that if recycling works at waste centres, then it'll work elsewhere? There is no need for that incinerator. It's a no-brainer.
