I write with reference to the recent comments from AFR West entitled "Emission nonsense" (Letters, March 31) and wish to clear the air (pun intended) by stating that there is a clear majority in the scientific community who agree global warming is due to human activity.
But even if this view isn't accepted, is it not better anyway to encourage cleaner, healthier air to breathe?
Louise Goldsmith, who I appointed West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment and economy, is vigorously addressing our environmental impact both locally and globally.
Should we not also remember that despite environmental arguments, breaking our dependence on oil has global political advantages too?
After all, we almost certainly wouldn't be in the Persian Gulf right now if it weren't for that dependence on oil.
- Henry Smith, leader, West Sussex County Council
