A 17-year-old boy was killed in a car crash that left two of his friends injured.

Zach O'Connor, of Burgess Hill, was in a Ford Focus that crashed into a tree in Malthouse Lane, Hurstpierpoint.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the roadside and police arrested the driver.

A shrine has built up at the scene after grieving friends and relatives left pictures of Zach, letters, cigarettes, a hubcap, Easter eggs and about 25 bouquets of flowers.

Zach's parents wrote: "To our darling Zach - thank you for being you. We love you so much, you brought us such happiness and sunshine.

"You are the kindest person we had the privilege of knowing. You will be in our heart every second of every day.

"We are so pleased you enjoyed life, always having fun and laughing. Sleep well our smiling boy. Mummy, Daddy and JJ."

The Sussex Police helicopter, paramedics and firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the crash at the north end of the quiet country lane just before 9pm last Wednesday.

Two girls in the car were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

One, described as having serious injuries, is still in the hospital. The other has been released. A second boy received only minor injuries.

Police said the car left the road at a bend and smashed into the tree after the driver, thought to be one of the injured girls, lost control.

The roof of the car was flattened on to the back seats.

A moving tribute left by friends at the roadside read: "Zach, one of the lads. You were always there - good times.

"Riding won't be the same without you. Mates forever. Matt, Martin and the rest of the guys."

Another message read: "I will love you always and forever and one day we will walk together again.

"My memories of you will never fade because I know you are still with me.

"I will never stop loving you my beautiful Zach, always and forever, Nikki."

Sussex Police said yesterday they could not confirm what offence the driver had been arrested for.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
