Forty people had to be evacuated after a fire started in a block of flats.

The blaze was caused by an electrical fault in a basement utility area of the building in Regency Square, Brighton.

People living in the four-storey block had a rude awakening early this morning as the building quickly filled with smoke and firefighters warned them to get out.

The blaze was quickly put out but fire crews stayed at the scene for more than two hours to make sure the smoke had all cleared away.

Residents sheltered at a nearby hotel while the work was being done but were let back into their homes by 5am.

The fire affected the building's electricity supply so emergency crews from EDF Energy were called out to restore its power.
