PHOEBE Connolly ran a sub six-minute mile to win her fourth Mini Mile race.

The Roedean sixth former ran fantastically and won the Brighton Mini-Mile on Saturday April 11, a day before nearly 10,000 took to Brighton and Hove’s streets for the Brighton Marathon.

Her time was an impressive 5min 54sec, and in seeing off all of her rivals she managed to win the race for the fourth time.

Phoebe has been running seriously for about ten years and is ranked 20th in the UK for the under-17 mile. She has also won the Brighton Half Marathon youth races, and has a personal best for the 3,000m on the track of 11min 40sec.

A school spokeswoman said: “Not only is Phoebe a very talented runner, but she is also an excellent artist and an art scholar of the school.

“She loves photography too, and she has been a finalist for the last two years of the British Wildlife Young Photography Award.”

Phoebe says that one of her ambitions is to run a half-marathon next year, and she intends to run at least two marathons over the next ten years.

Phoebe was not the only person from Roedean to run the at the weekend. Director of sport Karen Andrews, who has played rugby for England 42 times and played professionally for eight years, was also out in the beautiful conditions and she completed the Brighton marathon in 3hours 48min.

The school spokeswoman added: “We should also take this opportunity to thank our fifteen students who manned a water station at the 10-mile mark of the marathon as the route passed the school, supported by seven members of staff and four parents.

“They were all shouting and cheering for the hot and tired runners.

“Let’s see if Phoebe and Karen have inspired any others from Roedean to take up the challenge and run next year.”
