Well, my picture of Aidan Turner as Poldark in my last column caused a stir – but not quite how I expected.
One cross male reader emailed me to say: “I was wondering just how you and other women would view a male reporter putting a picture of a scantily clad young woman in the paper and then talking about it as if it had to be done and how you have no reason to put it in your column except as an excuse to ogle her.”
When I replied that I believe men and women view pictures of scantily clad members of the opposite sex very differently, he accused me of having “disrespect for men and the male readers of The Argus” and a “total ignorance of how all men think”, and believes that I “have either led a very sheltered life or not met many women”.
He encouraged me to “research into the discrimination and fear men face in everyday life, how they are portrayed on TV or in adverts and soaps as some kind of buffoons, how they are positively discriminated against but don't receive the same leg up for careers which have very few men in, like teachers... I could go on and on...”
Well, I’m willing to learn and would love to hear from male readers in this position.
Email me at katy.rice@theargus.co.uk if you are a man who feel discriminated against, or if you face fear in your everyday life. I look forward to hearing from you.
