A NEW guide to Durham Cathedral has been launched.

Publishers of Durham Cathedral: History, Fabric and Culture are promising a comprehensive account of the cathedral’s 900-year history with contributions from 30 experts on the founding, development, building and decoration of the Norman shrine.

Its publication by Yale University Press was supported by the Friends of Durham Cathedral.

The book features a number of essays, focusing on liturgy, music, stained glass, learning, book collecting and more, with 400 images including archive and new photographs.

It was edited by Rev Prof David Brown, a former Durham University professor now at the University of St Andrews.

Cathedral canon Rosalind Brown said the book was a “landmark publication” and predicted it would become the definitive book on the cathedral’s history and heritage.

“I am learning so much through reading the essays.

“Taken together, they make a vital contribution to our knowledge of the cathedral’s past, thus informing our understanding of its present and helping to shape its future.

“Most importantly, the publication is a fascinating celebration of Durham Cathedral’s enormous historical, spiritual, cultural and architectural significance,” she said.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has described the tome as “the defining big book about Durham Cathedral for this century”.

The book, launched at the cathedral last month, is priced £75 and available now from the cathedral shop or online at durhamcathedral.co.uk
