Je suis Charlie part 3: the last laugh At last, a copy arrives via eBay from Paris (sweet stamp shows paper darts = air mail…) and what all the fuss was about.
Recall Hari-Kiri: it was turned into Charlie Hebdo because of a headline « Bal tragique à Colombey : 1 mort » (Eng: "Tragic ball in Colombey: 1 death"). The government felt this editorial choice was an offence of lèse-majesté against the deceased President de Gaulle. As a result, the magazine was immediately and permanently banned from sale to minors and banned from getting any advertising or publicity.
Here in Brighton, the distributors prevaricated and hoped customers would just go away…..
And the martyrs were part of a turf-war in Yemen.. All over Danish cartoons on 30th September 2005 depicting Muhammad… Aniconism eat your heart out…..
In this issue of Charlie Hebo, there were two cartoons like that: the cover by Luz who has another drawing in which the terrorists, drawn with angel wings, ask in disappointment: "Bah, where are the 70 virgins?" A talking bubble beside them reads: "They are with the Charlie team, losers." There are no other depictions of Mohammad within the issue though many in the recent Private Eye homage.
There is an internal contradiction in the theological condemnation of depicting Mohammad, be it an a good or bad light: he is surely above getting upset about it. And that is why only minority sects turn to banning any such pictures….
Some words can never been written down, as the paper self-immolates…
