Contrary to press pressure “Saturday November 29th 2014 is Buy Nothing Day (UK). It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!”
Newspapers had a vested interesting in promoting consumerism : (Argus = “Black Friday (28/11/2014) has swept across the UK in the past few years and this year's sales extravaganza is predicted by analysts to be the biggest yet.
The event originated in the United States, and is the Friday following Thanksgiving, which is regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping season in America.
The day often sparks outpouring of violence at America stores as shoppers fight for the best bargains - with shootings and stabbings reported.”)
However, as anti-fun protesters point out: “Buy Nothing Day is non-confrontational, we don’t waving anti-shopping banners. This type of campaigning can bee seen as negative and blurring the issues. Instead we’ll say ‘smile’ or ‘shop less, live more’, we ask people to have a bit of fun , use their imagination and simply escape consumerism for a day. It could be argued that this method of campaigning won’t capture the public’s attention or is laughing in the face of the more important issues. If people laugh at the ingenuity and genius of Buy Nothing Day, then we’ve got their attention and we are opening the door.
People come on, show Mother Earth some respect! Don't buy anything on that day, instead sit down in a chair and think to yourself, "Do I actually need this stuff I am buying?" ”
NO SHOPPING DAY ! Make this the first day of your new life!
