The closure of a garage following a suspected LPG gas leak is causing major tailbacks.
A fire crew are standing by after reports of a LPG gas leak at the BP Garage in Lewes Road, Brighton, which was called into the fire service at just after 8am this morning.
An underground tank is believed to be leaking liquefied petroleum gas and a cordon has been set-up around the main incident site.
Contractors have now been called out to resolve the problem.
Sussex Police are currently at the scene and although roads currently remain open one lane on the northbound carriage is blocked by a fire engine.
Motorists are being urged to stay away from the area as the incident combined with the roadworks at Vogue Gyratory is causing long tailbacks out of the city centre.
Bus services are also severely delayed through the area with Southern Rail accepting bus passengers.
Fire crews are constantly monitoring the gas content in the air and have identified the location of the leak and are working with specialist contractors to make the area safe.
Coombe Road resident David Thomas said: "Its massive tailbacks and the buses are clearly not running anything close to on time.
"Traffic is from the bottom of Elm Grove all the way up to Vogue Gyratory itself and then there's the bike lane works as well."
