Every month, Brighton beauty boffin, Rosie Crompton, brings you all the latest in beauty news and reviews - from reporting on the latest trends and must-haves to discovering the best local beauty spots. This week, she’s updated her look for the new season at Shine Hair & Beauty.
A NEW season means a switch up in my wardrobe, make-up and hair colour, and with the beautiful ‘bronde’ tones all the rage for AW14, I couldn’t wait to get back in the salon chair.
‘Bronde’ is the latest colour craze that is neither dark blonde nor light brown, but encompasses rich golden, honey tones on a medium blonde to dark base. As with its predecessor, the ombre trend, this look is low maintenance and economical, with the colours working together best in a soft, graduated effect with darker roots and lighter ends. I booked myself into Shine Hair & Beauty, a tranquil salon tucked away in Brighton’s lanes, to update my summery blonde dip-dye into a rich, autumnal bronde.
The salon itself is a gorgeous space with a laid-back atmosphere. The interior fuses a rustic feel with urban features: exposed hanging light bulbs, lavender plants, leather chairs and dressing tables made from timber and scaffolding.
All clients are welcomed and offered a complimentary head and shoulder massage with their choice of aromatherapy oils. I chose a relaxing sandalwood scent, and instantly began to unwind.
My colourist, David, advised me not to jump full in to the bronde trend just because it’s in fashion, suggesting the look I wanted would be best suited to natural brunettes with a darker skin tone. Instead, we worked together to pick out colours that would reflect the trend whilst suiting my natural colouring.
Initially, I was a little disappointed – but it’s the sign of a great hairdresser when they can use their professional knowledge to ensure that their client ends up looking their best. The results may be subtle, but have added a richer, autumnal tone to my hair and a nod towards the bronde trend, and taken away the boho-beachy look I wore all summer.
The look was achieved by using Wella Colour ID highlights and lowlights, followed by a golden brown toner to add depth and a glossy finish. I was then treated to a deep repair treatment and relaxed for half an hour in the salon’s massage chairs. My makeover was completed by Alice, who after a quick trim, styled my hair in this season’s ethereal waves – achieved by styling tight curls with a Babyliss curling machine before brushing them out to create soft, loose waves.
