Runners from across Sussex took part in the fast and flat Hove Prom 10k as part of the Sussex Grand Prix series of races.

The race on Sunday, September 21 at Hove Lagoon, had around 260 people compete, all eager to win the £50 prize.

James Baker from Chichester, a well-known athlete throughout Hampshire and Sussex, won the men’s race with a time of 32.30.

He said “I haven’t run the race since I last won it in 2008.”

Mr Baker, referred to by a marshal as the man who wins everything, came into the race in good form having won in Hampshire the day before.

He now has more than 600 race wins in his amateur career.

Sue Fry of Halsham Harriers and winner of the ladies competition with a time of 38.44, said “I was shocked. The conditions were good for running which helped.”

The race is organised by Arena 80 AC, a running club based in Withdean.

Fiona Jamie, the race director said “It’s one of the smaller races on the circuit. We organise another race in Hove Park which is much bigger.”

The race had a friendly atmosphere with many runners calling encouragement to each other from across the course and onlookers applauding them as they went past.

Ms Jamie said the event was “more for local runners” which added to the spirit of the race.

Despite ideal conditions for running neither course record, 31.29 for men and 37.31 for women, were broken.

Results will be put online at arena80.tripod.com soon.
