Brighton was in festive mood for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II which brightened up the drab summer of 1953.
This picture shows decorations in and around the Clock Tower. They stayed up proudly for months.
In those days there were no restrictions on cars using the junction while there was a marked and surprising absence of buses.
The Barclays Bank building behind the Clock Tower was replaced in the 1970s by a large branch of Boots.
Tucked away on either side of it was the much loved Regent cinema and ballroom which have also long since disappeared.
