A MOTHER whose young son was hit by a car said the accident was every parent’s worst nightmare.
Mother-of-three Kathleen Hannam, 29, was walking her four-year-old son Alfie to school on Monday morning when he was hit by a car as they crossed the road.
They were walking to the bus stop just a two-minute walk from their home in Court Lodge Close, Lower Dicker, with Alfie’s sisters Tiffany, one, and Charlie, seven.
Ms Hannam said: “We were waiting to cross the A22. We stopped and looked, and there were quite a lot of cars.
“A lady in a small silver car slowed down to let us cross onto the island in the middle of the road.
“I looked back and Alfie wasn’t with us. He ran out into the road and was hit.
“Me and my eldest daughter both screamed and he flew backwards and landed about 15ft away from where he was hit.”
She said a lady from the Metamorphosis Interiors shop rushed out to help her keep Alfie calm as they waited for an ambulance.
Ms Hannam said she “feared the worst” for her son, a pupil at Marshlands Primary School in Hailsham.
She added: “It was every mother’s worst nightmare.”
Police officers cordoned off the road and Alfie was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital at Brighton.
His mother said: “He was a lucky little boy to come out with just bruising and a broken collar bone.”
The accident has spurred Ms Hannam to campaign for a pedestrian crossing on the road where Alfie was hit.
She said there are several young families living on their estate and she does not believe the pedestrian facilities are adequate for the school run.
She said: “I am going to start a petition to get a crossing put at that point.
“I have already got in touch with East Sussex County Council to tell them what has happened.”
Anyone with information about the accident should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 171 of 2/6 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
